HC Deb 20 November 1947 vol 444 c202W
Mr. Paget

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power the average consumption, as calculated by his Department, of petrol consumed per passenger mile by public-service vehicles operating routes in rural areas and per mile of motor cycles and motor-cycle combinations, respectively.

Mr. Gaitskell

I have no information as to the amount of petrol consumed per passenger mile by public service vehicles operating routes in rural areas. The average petrol consumption of motor cycles and motor-cycle combinations varies, of course, with the cylinder capacity and-age of the machine. The performance of machines under 500 cc. made in 1939 and later, may lie between 75 and 112 miles per gallon, while that of machines of 500 c.c. and over, varies between 45 and 70 miles per gallon.
