§ Mr. Peter Freemanasked the Attorney General whether he is aware of conditions sometimes made in bequests which infringe on the normal personal freedom of recipients, such as acceptance of certain religious beliefs or re-marriage; and whether he will introduce legislation to make such conditions illegal.
The Solicitor-GeneralConditions of the type contemplated by the hon. Member may under the existing law be invalid as being illegal, contrary to public policy or uncertain. If a condition is valid the legatee is free to elect whether or not to comply with it and accept the bequest. In these circumstances, I see no sufficient reason for making all such conditions illegal, and His Majesty's Government have no present intention of introducing legislation on the lines suggested.
