HC Deb 17 November 1947 vol 444 c143W
121. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Minister of Food whether he is aware of the growing black market in illegally slaughtered animals; and whether he is satisfied with the measures taken to prevent it.

Dr. Summerskill

I have no reliable evidence, but there are indications that illicit slaughter is on the increase and special measures are being taken to intensify our activities against this offence. I should welcome any help or information which the hon. Member can give us to stamp out such practices.

122. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Minister of Food the number of prosecutions and convictions for illegal slaughtering of animals in the last six months; and the highest sentence imposed.

Dr. Summerskill

During the six months ended 30th September, 1947, there were 601 prosecutions for offences against the Livestock (Restriction on Slaughtering) Order. Convictions were obtained in 555 of these cases. The most severe penalty imposed was twelve months' imprisonment.
