HC Deb 11 November 1947 vol 444 cc41-2W
Mrs. Nichol

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total amount claimed by our Allies from us arising from the war; how many nations are making such claims and the amount in each case; and whether any of the countries concerned have offered to scale down their claims.

Mr. Dalton

If my hon. Friend is thinking of outstanding sterling balances, I would refer her to Cmd. 7099 and to my speech of 7th August last, which contained full details. Apart from the generous gifts by Australia and New Zealand, of £20 million and £10 million, respectively, no offers of scaling down have been made.

60. Mr. D. Marshall

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the amount of the unfunded old sterling balances at the 15th July, 1947; and what is the corresponding figure for the latest date available.

Mr. Dalton

Total sterling balances at 30th September were £3,565 million, compared with a revised figure of £3,680 million at 30th June. More than half of these were blocked by agreement.
