Mr. Walkden

asked the Minister of Labour what number of persons registered at Doncaster as engineers, also workers normally employed in the building trades, were unemployed at comparable dates in October, 1945, 1946 and 1947; and if he will indicate the respective categories of such registered unemployed persons.

The following table shows the numbers of wholly unemployed men, aged 18 and over, registered at the Doncaster Employment Exchange for employment in the principal engineering occupations at nearest available dates:

The numbers of insured men in the building industry registered as wholly unemployed at the Doncaster Employment Exchange at the same dates were 14, 32, and 33, respectively, including four and two in skilled building crafts at the first two dates and none at the third date.

Mr. Walkden

asked the Minister of Labour how many persons male and female were registered at Doncaster and in the adjoining mining villages under the Disabled Persons Employment Act, on the 4th October, 1947; whether he will furnish information as to the steps taken to provide employment for such persons; and whether the proposals include plans to construct a factory in the area for such eligible workpeople.

Every effort is being made both under the quota scheme and otherwise to assist these persons to get suitable employment. The Disabled Persons Employment Corporation proposes to open a Remploy factory in this area.
