HC Deb 11 November 1947 vol 444 cc50-1W
81. Captain Field

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will consider controlling the supply of drugs, chemicals and other materials furnished to manufacturers of proprietary and quack medicines both in view of the economic situation and of the deleterious effect of the indiscriminate use of these medicines; and whether he will ensure that the materials and the labour so used are put to better use in the national interest.

Mr. Belcher

Drugs, chemicals and other raw materials are allocated for the manufacture of proprietary medicines only when the needs of hospitals, doctors and dispensing chemists have been met. I should hesitate to condemn such medicines generally, and they make in fact a useful contribution to the export effort.
