HC Deb 10 November 1947 vol 444 cc18-9W
121. Mr. Gallacher

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs why a committee preparing for the foundation of a Socialist Unity Party in Hanover, Stadthagen and Luneberg was ordered to stop their work by the British Military Government; and what reason was given for this action.

Mr. Mayhew

In replying to this Question, I must point out that three committees were involved and not one as suggested by the hon. Member, two of them being in Hanover, one in Luneberg and none in Stadthagen. Bans were imposed on these committees by British Military Government in accordance with our general policy towards the formation of the Socialist Unity Party in the British zone. Our policy is that so long as there is no evidence that the Social Democratic Party as a whole wishes to amalgamate with the German Communist Party on a zonal basis, no official committees preparing for the foundation of the Socialist Unity Party will be allowed in the British zone.
