HC Deb 04 November 1947 vol 443 cc179-80W
Major McCallum

asked the President of the Board of Trade what was the reason for the recent survey carried out by a lady official of his Department on the Island of Islay; what particular goods were surveyed; what was the cost of the survey including transport by air, hire of motor cars on the island, hotel accommodation, etc.; and if the result of the survey justified the expense involved.

Mr. H. Wilson

The hon. and gallant Member is presumably referring to a six-day visit to Islay made by an officer of the Board to carry out a routine survey of supplies and stocks of consumer goods other than food, including clothing, footwear and household equipment of all kinds. Periodic checks of this kind are made in all parts of the country in order to ensure that available supplies are evenly distributed and to ease special local difficulties wherever possible. The total cost of the visit, including transport and hotel accomodation, was £13 5s. The answer to the last part of the Question is "Yes."
