109. Mr. Shawcrossasked the Minister of Supply whether he is aware that most of the export trade in motorcars may come to an abrupt end within the next two years, whereas there is a world-wide and increasing demand for agricultural machinery; and if he will take steps to reorganise the motor industry for large-scale production of agricultural machinery.
§ Mr. John JonesThere is no reason to believe that the export trade in motorcars will come to an abrupt end in the next two years and I hope that the motorcar industry will make an increasing contribution to the solution of the balance of payments problem as new models come into production. As regards agricultural machinery, plans have been made for greatly increased production of tractors and other machinery, and motor manufacturers are already largely responsible for the tractor production.
