HC Deb 04 November 1947 vol 443 c197W
Mr. Gammans

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the approximate area of Highland and Lowland tea grown in Malaya and how much of it is at present under cultivation.

Mr. Rees-Williams

The last figures available are for 1946 when 5,317 acres of Highlands and 3,380 acres of Lowlands were planted with tea and 30 of the total of 52 estates were in production. Nineteen forty-six production was 25 per cent. of 1941 and was obtained from less than half the 1931 planted acreage. Rehabilitation is going ahead rapidly and the position has much improved in 1947.
