§ Mr. Platts-Millsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1) why the Commander-in-Chief, Germany, refused to grant permits to visitors from and through the British zone to the Second Conference of the Socialist Unity Party, held in Berlin on 20th to 24th September;
(2) whether he is aware that a ban was imposed by the Commander-in-Chief, Germany, on the proposed visit by the hon. Member for Finsbury to the Second Conference of the Socialist Unity Party, held in Berlin on 20th to 24th September; and whether he will ensure that Members of this House shall not, in future, be prevented from travelling in British-controlled areas and familiarising themselves with conditions generally.
§ Mr. MayhewFacilities are granted for travel to and from areas under British control in Germany whenever they would serve the purposes of the occupation, and as my hon. Friend must be aware, considerable freedom of movement has in particular been allowed in the past to Members of this House. The applications for the visits referred to by my hon. Friend were not considered to be of this character.
