An average for the years 1934–38 is available, however, and is normally used for purposes of comparison, since it has the advantage of minimising the effects of year-to-year variations in supplies and annual stock changes before the war, about which information is not fully available. The average calorie intake per head per day in 1934–38 was 3,000.
