asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what proportion of the national income is devoted to Government-sponsored research.

The expenditure given in my reply of 5th May to the hon. Member for the Forest of Dean (Mr. Philips Price), with contributions by industry to Government-aided Research Associations and a proportion of grant-aided University expenditure, is about 0.8 per cent. of the estimated national income for 1947–8.
