§ 6. Mr. Dodds-Parkerasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps have been taken to repair the effects of the fire which took place in the capital of the Falkland Islands in 1945; and whether the cost of rebuilding is to fall entirely on the resources of the Colony.
Mr. Creech JonesThe Town Hall in Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands, which housed several Government offices, the Museum and Public Library, was burnt out on 17th April, 1944. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining building materials, etc., the hall has not yet been rebuilt. The sum of £19,630 was paid to the Falklands Government in respect of insurances, but, since this amount is not expected to cover the cost of reconstruction at present-day prices, the Governor has under consideration the submission of an application for assistance50W under the Colonial Development and Welfare Act.
