HC Deb 26 March 1947 vol 435 cc198-9W
61. Mr. Erroll

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether inward telegram No. 674, from the Governor of the Gold Coast, dated 8th August, 1946, sent in reply to the Secretary of State's, telegram No. 644, was marked "secret" and whether permission was given to the Solicitors' Law Stationery Society Limited, to print it in a form intended for wide public distribution.

Mr. Creech Jones

The answer to the first part of the Question is "Yes." As a very exceptional step copies of both the telegrams referred to in the Question were sent by me, with the Governor's agreement, to certain Members of the House who had shown great interest in this case. This was done at the Members' own request. When sending the copies I told Members that, while they were intended primarily for their own information, there would be no objection to their publication if Members thought it desirable, provided the telegrams were quoted in full, as they had been. The answer to the second part of the Question is in the negative.
