HC Deb 26 March 1947 vol 435 c207W
Sir G. Fox

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury how much money annually is being spent on bringing home candidates for the Civil Service executive entrance examination; what is the average cost; and whether they are brought home by sea or air.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

About 180 people have been brought home up to the present, about 80 per cent. of whom were serving with the Armed Forces, and 20 per cent. members of the Civil Service on tours of duty abroad. The first group would normally use Service transport, and it is not possible in their case to identify the cost. Elaborate inquiries involving disproportionate labour would be necessary to ascertain the numbers who travelled by sea and air respectively.
