Mr. Creech JonesEducational policy in Bermuda is a matter for the Colonial Government, but my Advisory Committee on Education in the Colonies would be consulted if my advice were sought on any substantial question of policy. As regards the staff, although school teachers in Bermuda are not members of the Civil Service, their salaries, apart from those of teachers of non-vested schools, are paid from Government funds. Head teachers of non-vested schools receive a Government grant and fees: assistant teachers are paid by the Bermuda Board of Education. At the end of June, 1946, when war bonus and subsistence allowances were discontinued, new salary scales, including adjustments for the bonus and allowances, were introduced. Recruitment is predominantly from local sources.
