HL Deb 25 March 1947 vol 146 cc800-2WA
LORD RUSSELL OF LIVERPOOL

asked His Majesty's Government why it has been decided that British dead in Germany are to remain buried in enemy soil; whether it is not a fact that, save Royal Air Force crews, all Dominion and Colonial dead are to be brought from Germany; that all other Canadian dead are being brought back to Holland and that no identified French, Belgian, Dutch or Polish dead are being left in Germany; and whether the Government will not reconsider the position and make similar arrangements for British dead to rest among friends and allies.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (LORD PAKENHAM)

His Majesty's Government decided that the most appropriate place for military cemeteries would be the countries and areas in which the men fell. This policy is being followed by all the Dominion Governments, although a small number of Canadian Army dead were moved from Germany into Holland during 1945, before any general decision on the location of military cemeteries had been taken. It is not known what policy is being followed by the Governments of France, Belgium, Holland and Poland in this matter. His Majesty's Government intend to adhere to the present policy, which was adopted after the most careful consideration.

House adjourned at seventeen minutes past seven o'clock.
