HL Deb 13 March 1947 vol 146 c398WA
VISCOUNT BRIDGEMAN

asked His Majesty's Government whether it is a fact that, in certain cases, British Army Officers serving in India are paid less than Indian officers holding equivalent ranks and appointments and, if so, whether they can give the reasons for such differential treatment.

LORD PETHICK-LAWRENCE

Yes, this is the case in regard to King's Commissioned Indian officers. These officers (whose recruitment ceased in 1933) passed through Sandhurst and received full Commissions in His Majesty's Land Forces. No distinction has been made between their pay and that of British officers of the Indian Army, and since the pay of the latter is, generally speaking, higher than the pay of officers of the British Army, so is the pay of the former.

House adjourned at a quarter before six o'clock.
