HC Deb 11 March 1947 vol 434 c157W
42 Sir G. Jeffreys

asked the Secretary of State for War why the proposed new serge jackets for the Army are to be in all cases blue; whether there is any saving of expense to the public in this arrangement; and whether he will now arrange for these jackets to be red in the case of regiments whose uniform has always been red, blue in the case of regiments whose uniform has always been blue, and green in the case of rifle regiments.

Mr. Bellenger

Under the approved arrangements for the new general duties dress, although the majority of regiments will wear blue, Highland Regiments will wear piper green, and Rifle and Light Infantry Regiments, rifle green. Careful consideration was given to the possibility of adopting scarlet as the basic colour, but this proposal was rejected both on the grounds of expense arid because it was thought doubtful whether scarlet would be popular for a walking out dress.
