§ 80. Mr. Peter Freemanasked the Minister of Transport the average amount of coal estimated to be saved per year by each of the engines transferred to diesel oil; and how many further engines it is proposed to refit with diesel-oil equipment this year on each of the main lines.
§ Mr. BarnesIt is too soon to give a close estimate of the amount of coal saved by conversion of locomotives from coal to oil burning; but it is estimated that when the full programme of conversion is realised a saving of about 1,000,000 tons of coal a year should be obtained. 133W Twenty engines have so far been converted and it is proposed to convert about 1,200 in all.
