HC Deb 04 March 1947 vol 434 c43W
95. Mr. Emrys Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for War why certain battalions of the Royal Welch Fusiliers are being converted into units of the R.A.; by whom these Welsh battalions are to be replaced in the 53rd Welsh Division; and whether he will give instructions that Welsh troops are to be given the opportunity of serving in Welsh battalions and staying in such battalions.

Mr. Bellenger

In order to meet the requirements of modern warfare some prewar Territorial Amy infantry battalions must be converted to other arms. The battalions affected have been offered a choice of the new role to be allotted to them. Four Infantry battalions and the majority of the divisional troops of 53rd Infantry Division, together with numerous corps and army troops are located in Wales. As recruiting is purely local, Welshmen will have every opportunity to serve with a Welsh unit.
