asked the Minister of Labour how many men were registered as unemployed in the city of Glasgow on the latest date available; and how many of them belonged to engineering, commerce, distribution, transport and building trades, respectively.

The total number of insured men, aged 18 and under 65, registered as unemployed at employment exchanges in Glasgow at 19th February, 1947, was 21,133. Figures for particular industries are not available for any date later than 13th January; the total number of insured men registered as unemployed in Glasgow at that date was 19,951, and the numbers in the industries specified were as follow:

Engineering 2,377
Construction and repair of motor vehicles, cycles and aircraft 828
Commerce and finance 27
Distributive trades 1,180
Transport and communications 2,004
Building trades 1,281
