§ 77. Mr. Randallasked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that the restoration of the cuts promised for expenditure on highway engineering are inadequate and do not take into account the severe weather of the recent winter months; and if additional expenditure will be authorised.

§ Mr. BarnesNo. The additional maintenance grants which are now being made available include substantial amounts for the repair of damage caused by the severe weather. These amounts are based on estimates supplied by the highway authorities.
§ Mr. Randallasked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that the policy of economy of expenditure on classified roads at present being adopted is regarded by local authorities as unwise; that if a severe winter is again experienced present saving will result in doubled expenditure; and if he will review present policy in this matter.
§ Mr. BarnesI am advised that with the standard of maintenance which the increased grants now available will permit, my hon. Friend's fears are not likely to be realised.
