§ Mr. StracheyThe special committee appointed to examine possible economies in manpower is working through three sub-committees whose recommendations are communicated to the responsible officers concerned as they are reached. As a consequence between 1st March, when the committee commenced its examination, and 1st May, a reduction of 1,072 had been effected in the staff of the Ministry. I expect to receive an interim report from the committee next month summarising the action already taken upon its recommendations and the further action proposed.
