Because of the difficulty of purchasing overseas herring barrel, staves of the desired quality, licences for certain grades of Northern European whitewood, including the better grades of Swedish whitewood, were for a time granted only for this purpose. I regret that particulars of the quantity of Swedish wood used for the, conveyance of fish to Germany are not separately recorded.
