HC Deb 02 July 1947 vol 439 cc162-3W
88. Mr. Stokes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the name and qualifications of the geological adviser to the Government of Palestine, who, in 1923, reported on the production of minerals from the waters of the Dead Sea.

Mr. Creech Jones

The late Mr. G. S. Blake, who was a Bachelor of Science, Associate of Royal School of Mines, Fellow of Geological Society, and Member of Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

89. Mr. Stokes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the quantities of sodium chloride estimated to be available in the waters of the Dead Sea by the geological adviser to the Palestinian Government in 1923; and at what value he would estimate these quantities in sterling today.

Mr. Creech Jones

11,900 million metric tons. It is impossible to put a value upon Dead Sea common salt as, owing to the heavy freight charges, it cannot compete with salt from other sources.
