§ 1. Mr. Hector Hughesasked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many qualified female nurses there were in Scotland on 1st January, 1946; how many there are now, or at the latest convenient date; how many girls enrolled in Scotland as student nurses during the years 1945, 1946 and 1947, respectively; and how many female nurses left the profession during the same respective periods.
§ Mr. WestwoodOn 1st January, 1946, the number of State-registered and Enrolled Assistant Nurses in Scotland was 17,767. On 31st May, 1947, the number was 20,858. The numbers of women who became student nurses in Scottish hospitals during 1945, 1946 and the first five months of 1947 are estimated as 2,500, 3,200 and 1,300. I regret that I am unable to give my hon. Friend the numbers of women who left the nursing profession during the same periods.
