§ Miss WilkinsonStatistics for these months are not available, but in January, 1946, there were 75 nursery schools maintained by local education authorities and 17 under voluntary management. By the summer of 1946 these numbers had risen to 286 and 20 respectively, the increase in the first figure being due to the transfer of wartime nurseries to local education authorities.
