§ 67. Mr. Rhys Daviesasked the Minister of Fuel and Power if he will give an estimate of the amount of coal used by, and 73W in respect of, the Fighting Services; what steps have been taken by him with those Departments to economise coal, in view of the shortage of supply for domestic and industrial purposes; and with what results.
§ Mr. ShinwellThe average weekly tonnages of coal used by the Fighting Services during November, 1946, were as follow:
Royal Navy … … 9,250 Army … … 14,460 R.A.F. … … 7,440 The Services have cooperated very fully with my Department and have made substantial economies. It is not possible, owing to changing commitments and conditions, to assess the savings precisely, but the figures I have given represent reductions, compared with the corresponding period last year, of 53.7 per cent., 36.1 per cent. and 42.3 per cent. respectively.
