§ 105. Mr. Prittasked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster under whose auspices Dr. Schumacher addressed a meeting of German prisoners of war in this country on or about 1st December, 1946; whether it was approved that he should make a political address; whether any steps were taken to prevent him making an attack on the Soviet Union either before he spoke or when he made the attack; who presided at the meeting; and whether leaders of other political parties in Germany will be given similar facilities to make political addresses here.
§ Mr. J. HyndThe visit of Dr. Schumacher to No. 300 P/W Camp, Wilton Park, on 1st December, 1946, was arranged by my Department in conjunction with the War Office. Before his talk Dr. Schumacher was informed, in accordance with the usual practice, that his speech should not be of a party political nature. He understood and accepted this, and his speech did not, in fact, depart from the rule. The head of the resident Control Office staff at the camp presided28W at the meeting. There was not, nor can there be at this stage, any question of granting facilities for Germans to make political speeches to prisoners of war.
