HC Deb 21 January 1947 vol 432 c14W
84. Mr. Sharp

asked the Secretary of State for War what proportion of British troops in Palestine are still living under canvas; what action is being taken to provide them with proper quarters and amenities; what uncompleted camps of the type required exist near Gaza or elsewhere; and when they will be completed.

Mr. Bellenger

About 85 per cent. of the British troops in Palestine are living under canvas. A high proportion of our men are necessarily housed in accommodation that is not designed for lengthy occupation. One of the semi-permanent camps near Gaza is due to be finished by the end of February and the other at the beginning of June. Everything is being done to improve accommodation and amenities that is possible within the limits imposed by the operational situation and factors of labour and materials in Palestine.
