HC Deb 27 February 1947 vol 433 c336W
135. Mr. Skinnard

asked the Minister of Food whether his attention has been drawn to the shortage of sticks of shaving soap; that this has been accentuated by purchases of this commodity by housewives who are using it in lieu of unobtainable domestic soap; and whether he will institute a form of rationing to ensure that men can obtain at least one stick a month.

Dr. Edith Summerskill

I know that shaving sticks are difficult to obtain, despite the satisfactory level of production. To include them in the general soap ration would not ensure supplies to men, and to create a separate ration scheme for men only for this one article would not be justified. I am sure that the majority of housewives are not purchasing shaving soap for other purposes. If any have been tempted to do so I appeal to them to remember men's special needs.
