§ 100. Mr. Carsonasked the Minister of Fuel and Power how many gallons of gas oil for use by gas undertakings to make water gas were imported from the U.S.A in 1946; and whether he expects to in crease this during 1947.
§ Mr. ShinwellThe total consumption of gas oil by gas undertakings in the United Kingdom in 1946 for the manufacture of carburated water gas was 134,000,000 gallons. Total imports of gas oil from all sources were 492,000,000 gallons of which 349,000,000 gallons were imported from the U.S.A., or roughly 70 per cent. As gas oil is used for a variety of purposes in addition to the manufacture of water gas, it is not possible to say exactly what proportion of the American import was used at gasworks.
