HC Deb 24 February 1947 vol 433 c247W
103. Mr. Rees-Williams

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what reply he has sent to a communication he has received from the Alumni Association of King Edward VII College of Medicine, Singapore, complaining that local medical and dental officers have been discouraged from staying in the public service, and that no effort has been made to bring about an equality of status, privileges and opportunity for the local people as compared to medical and dental officers recruited in Europe.

Mr. Creech Jones

I am deterring a full reply to these representations until the return from Malaya of my Medical Adviser who has recently had full discussions with the Association and with other interested parties. A Committee was set up locally last July to examine this question and certain of its recommendations, including the establishment of a single Medical Service with equal status of all officers of the Service, irrespective of race or domicile have already been accepted in principle.
