HC Deb 24 February 1947 vol 433 cc230-1W
28. Mr. Edward Davies

asked the Minister of Transport whether in view of the high percentage of railway workers who have left the railway industry since the lifting of the Essential Work Order, he will say in which departments the shortage of staff is most acute; and what steps are being taken to build up a staff adequate to the proper manning of the railways.

Mr. Barnes

Railway operations are most affected by shortage of experienced footplate staff and shunters. In addition to the normal machinery of recruit- ment through the Ministry of Labour, an advertising campaign in the Press and on railway premises has been undertaken and information about employment on the railways is given to service personnel on demobilisation.
