HC Deb 17 February 1947 vol 433 cc118-9W
58. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Agriculture why there is still a shortage of young fruit trees, in view of the long period that has elapsed during which there has been an increasing demand for more fruit; and what steps are being taken to secure an adequate supply to meet that demand.

Mr. T. Williams

A period of two to four years is required for the raising of young fruit trees. Sufficient time has not, therefore, elapsed to make good the losses due to the restrictions on fruit-growing imposed during the war. I am satisfied from inquiries I have made that the nursery trade is making every effort to increase the production of fruit trees, and arrangements have also been made for imports of suitable stocks from abroad.
