§ 1. Sir G. Foxasked the Secretary of State for Air if he is aware of the shortage of married quarters for R.A.F. personnel in this country; if he will take steps to provide more accommodation; and if he will consider issuing instructions that waiting lists should be displayed so that those applying for married quarters can know their position.
§ Mr. P. Noel-BakerThe Royal Air Force had 6,200 married quarters in this country before the war. Most of them needed extensive renovation when the war was over. At the end of December, 1946, 5,000 had been repaired and were already occupied; I hope the rest will very soon be ready for occupation. As the first step in our future programme, the provision of 850 new married quarters has been approved, and 450 of them are already being built. I am glad to assure the hon. and gallant Member that I shall do everything in my power to press forward with the provision of further married quarters. I have considered his proposal for the dislay of waiting lists, but, as at present advised, I am afraid it might create more difficulties than it solved.
