asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the amount of small savings and withdrawals for the year ended 5th April, 1946.

(a) The figures for encashments of Savings Certificates represent principal only. Accrued interest paid out with encashments amounted to £16,115,000.

(b) The figure; for the Post Office Savings Bank exclude Services Release Benefits accounts. Credits to the accounts during the year totalled —189,003,000 and withdrawals 61,323,000.
