asked the Minister of Transport if he will state in respect of what canals, and from whom, he has received applications for authority to abandon lengths of canal since July, 1945; and what action has been taken with regard to such applications.

Yes, Sir. Three such applications have been made. Two were by the Derby Canal Company, the first covering part of the undertaking, was with- drawn and a second was made covering the whole undertaking, The remaining application was by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company in respect of the Monkland Canal. Public notice has been given of the two outstanding applications. Objections have been received in each case, and are the subject of negotiations between the applicants and the objectors.
