§ Mr. Dodds-Parkerasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, with a view to improving the nutritional standard of the indigenous races, the attention of the Colonial Research Council will be directed to stimulating the production of fish by increasing the fertility of the lakes and rivers in the African colonies by artificial manures; and whether close attention will be paid to the results of the experiments recently carried out in Scotland, Canada and elsewhere in this direction.
Mr. Creech JonesThis matter falls within the terms of reference of the Colonial Fisheries Advisory Committee, on whose recommendation a free grant 29W of £115,000 has been made under the Colonial Development and Welfare Act for the establishment of a regional Fisheries Research Station at Jinja on Lake Victoria. A director of the Station has been appointed, and he is now actively engaged in its establishment.
30WBoth the Director and the Colonial Fisheries Advisory Committee are fully aware of the experimental work on the fertilisation of waters for the production of fish; and this method will be adopted, if found suitable, in East Africa and elsewhere in the Colonial territories.
