Mr. Kendallasked the Minister of Fuel and Power if, in view of the fact that petrol is no longer rationed in France, he will consider purchasing petrol from France in sufficient quantities to remove the necessity for the continuation of rationing here, especially based on the fact that France is in the sterling area.
§ Mr. ShinwellTo the best of my knowledge and belief, petrol is still rationed in France. Furthermore, it is not correct to say that France falls within the sterling area. It is not possible for this country to purchase petrol from France who limit their imports to their own requirements and have nothing to spare for the United Kingdom.
