HC Deb 05 February 1947 vol 432 cc356-7W
84. Sir P. Hannon

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to what extent British interests in Spitzbergen are affected as a result of the negotiations between the U.S.S.R. and Norway; and if His Majesty's Government approve the revision of the Spitzbergen Treaty, signed at Paris in 1920.

Mr. Bevin

According to my information, the exchange of views between the Soviet and Norwegian Governments regarding Spitzbergen have been of an explanatory nature only and neither Government has suggested to the other signatories of the Treaty of 1920, as would of course be necessary, that its revision should be discussed.
