HC Deb 05 February 1947 vol 432 cc367-8W
106. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, in view of the absence of a system of workmen's compensation for employees on the Kenya railways and in Government workshops, if steps will be taken by the Kenya Government to ensure workmen's compensation for its own employees; and to extend the principle by legislation to cover other employees.

Mr. Creech Jones

The Government of Kenya have recently enacted an ordinance to provide compensation to workmen for injuries suffered in the course of their employment. Employees on the railway and in the Government workshops are covered by the ordinance, which is expected to be brought into operation shortly. In the meantime, cases involving Government and railway employees are being dealt with by administrative action, on the basis of the scale to be introduced by the ordinance.
