HC Deb 04 February 1947 vol 432 cc338-9W
Mr. W. J. Brown

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether he is aware that recovery is still proceeding of outfit gratuity grants made in 1945 to Admiralty civilian staff detailed for transfer abroad whose passages were cancelled at the last minute for Service reasons; and if he will waive any further recovery seeing that much of the outfit purchased is unsuitable for use in this country.

Mr. W. Edwards

The general practice when an officer's appointment abroad is cancelled and he has already spent his outfit gratuity is to recover the residual value of those articles of clothing which could be worn in this country. If the hon. Member will give details of the cases which he has in mind, I will arrange for an examination to confirm that the amount recovered was calculated on this principle.
