HC Deb 03 February 1947 vol 432 cc278-9W
41. Mr. Scott-Elliot

asked the Minister of Food what progress has been made with regard to obtaining oil from herring in order to increase the fat ration.

Mr. Strachey

During the 1946 season, 1894 tons of herrings were sent to reduction factories for processing into oil and feeding meal. It is hoped to make extended arrangements on similar lines for the main herring fishings in 1947. The quantity of oil produced will not, of course, be sufficient in itself to permit an increase in the fat ration. Meanwhile, in conjunction with my right hon. Friends the Fisheries Ministers, I have set up a committee to study various long-term schemes for the reduction of herrings.
