HC Deb 03 February 1947 vol 432 c280W
85. Mr. J. E. Haire

asked the Minister of Food if he will consider discontinuing the imports of luxury fruits and thus reduce expenditure of sterling abroad and relieve transport for more useful purposes.

Mr. Strachey

I can assure my hon. Friend that the importation of fruits such as tangerines to which I take it he refers is only permitted where they do not adversely affect our balance of payments position nor draw off any shipping required for other more vital purposes. I must say I think these fruits have been very welcome.
