HC Deb 03 February 1947 vol 432 cc293-4W
107. Mr. Henderson Stewart

asked the Minister of Works if he is aware that the recent curtailment in the quota of glass for horticultural purposes has resulted in, cuts to the extent of 75 per cent. of supplies in the case of one of the largest Scottish firms and 66 per cent. in the case of an equally large English firm; that, in consequence, horticulturists in most parts of the country are now in difficulty many of them having obtained licences for repair and alteration of structures and actually begun pulling down the old structures; and if he will make inquiries into the situation and take steps to improve the supplies of such glass.

Mr. Tomlinson

The recent reductions in deliveries of horticultural glass have been due in the main to the temporary closure of a unit for repairs, to which I referred in my reply to the hon. Member on 16th December. This unit is now in production again. The output of horticultural glass will be maintained at the highest level possible with the available supplies of fuel, and I have agreed to the import of such glass in meeting the demand.
