HC Deb 03 February 1947 vol 432 cc274-5W
Mr. F. Noel-Baker

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether His Majesty's Ambassador at Athens will urge the Greek Government to use as sparingly as possible its powers under the new Greek Press laws and will draw the attention of that Government to the prejudicial effect that any suppression of the freedom of the Greek Press would have on British and Allied opinion in view of the presence of British troops in that country and the danger that they might become involved in disorders arising from such suppression.

Mr. Mayhew

His Majesty's Ambassador has already made such representations. According to my latest information the Press law has not been invoked since its introduction.
