HC Deb 03 February 1947 vol 432 cc281-2W
54. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in view of the shortage of home-grown fruit, he will take steps to encourage allotment holders and local authorities to plant fruit trees wherever practicable.

Mr. T. Williams

I am anxious to see an expansion of the fruit tree acreage, but owing to the shortage of young trees it would not generally be to the national advantage to divert part of the limited supply to allotments and other land in the hands of local authorities. In my view such land should primarily he used for vegetables.
